A 10th place in the 2022 Solitaire du Figaro was enough to attract attention within the IMOCA community. Her Vendée Globe debut then did something of an entirely different order, converting a highly regarded offshore prospect into a figure that captured the French public's imagination wholesale. Initiatives-Cœur was designed by Sam Manuard and built by Black Pepper Yachts in 2022, but the project has always carried a dimension that sits well outside race standings. The campaign raises funds for Mécénat Chirurgie Cardiaque, which provides heart surgery to children in developing countries, and more than 500 children have received operations through the initiative to date. The fundraising mechanism is embedded within the racing itself rather than running alongside it as a separate exercise. Sponsors link their donations directly to new social media followers, meaning that audiences following the race for sporting reasons are simultaneously contributing to the humanitarian work simply by engaging with the campaign online.
The Vendée Arctique sets a distinctly different examination from the southern latitudes where Dorange has done much of her serious learning. Pack ice, sustained cold, compressed racing windows and the unsettling quality of extended Arctic daylight all demand a particular kind of patience alongside raw boat-handling ability.
