Canfield threads the fleet at start to win Race 2 for USA on Hudson River

1 min read

Taylor Canfield steered the U.S. SailGP Team to victory in Race 2 on the Hudson River, taking the win in front of a home crowd. The BONDS Flying Roos finished second, Red Bull Italy third, NorthStar Canada fourth after a penalty, Mubadala Brazil fifth, and Emirates GBR sixth.

The start settled it. Canfield came in late from the bottom of the line, threading his acceleration through a gap in the fleet and getting onto a foil before the boats above him could react. The U.S. team led at Mark 1 and kept control from there. At the penultimate gate they had stretched a 120-metre buffer over NorthStar Canada. Australia closed hard on the final run, touching 70 kilometres per hour while the Americans sat at 54, but Canfield had enough water on the line.

Speaking after the race, Canfield said the tide was the dominant factor, and that racing in the previous day's reduced fleet had given his team a read on tidal conditions that paid off today.

Spain could not take their place on the startline. Hydraulic problems grounded Los Gallos before Race 2 got underway, and with one race remaining the Spanish team cannot reach the final.

Emirates GBR, who had won Race 1, fell away to sixth here after a poor start they were unable to recover from.
