The Porta Potti, introduced in 1968, transformed how recreational boating dealt with one of its most unglamorous necessities, and the cassette toilet that arrived in 1988 only deepened the brand's hold on the market. For Kiwis on the water, Thetford has long occupied that comfortable mental space alongside cleats and fenders as simply part of what a boat is.
The business was established in Michigan in 1963 and has since grown into the world's acknowledged leader in mobile sanitary systems, refrigerators, cooking equipment, and toilet additives. From the Bay of Islands to the Marlborough Sounds, its products are a familiar fixture in heads compartments the length of New Zealand waters.
Against that backdrop, news from within the company carries real significance for the marine industry. Stéphane Cordeille, Chief Executive Officer of Thetford, passed away on Sunday 31 May. His name may not have been widely recognised beyond the industry, yet his influence over the company that fundamentally reshaped sanitation aboard boats and RVs across the world was substantial.
The Thetford Executive Leadership Team paid tribute to Cordeille as a leader who guided the business through meaningful periods of growth and change. Those who worked alongside him spoke equally of the relationships he built with employees, customers, and industry partners spread right around the globe.
Thetford Australia has served both the Australian and New Zealand markets since 2006, operating through a network of more than 600 dealers, retailers, and service agents across the two countries.
The company has extended its condolences to Cordeille's family and loved ones.
