Stefan Arand leads F1H2O title race after surviving Cagliari chaos

Back-to-back wins across consecutive seasons tell a story of their own, but the manner of Stefan Arand's victory in Cagliari made an even louder statement. The 23-year-old Estonian had closed out the 2025 UIM F1H2O season by winning the final race in Sharjah, then arrived in Sardinia and did it again. The paddock once watched Arand with curiosity. It is now watching him with something closer to concern.

Sunday's Regione Sardegna Grand Prix of Italy was less a conventional race than an endurance test. A punishing westerly wind churned the water into conditions that transformed one of the most anticipated season openers in years into a brutal afternoon of attrition. Of the 18 boats that took the start, only 11 were classified finishers by the end. Five drivers barrel-rolled out of proceedings, including both men who had arrived in Sardinia as the overwhelming favourites. For anyone new to the sport, F1H2O places drivers in single-seater tunnel-hull catamarans on closed saltwater circuits, racing at speeds exceeding 220km/h with the cockpit sitting centimetres from the water surface and heavy G-forces loading through every corner. A barrel roll at those speeds almost always ends a driver's afternoon instantly. Cagliari produced five in a single race.

Defending World Champion Shaun Torrente was among those casualties. The American had come to Sardinia intent on launching his title defence with a commanding result as he chases a fifth world championship. He qualified on pole and led the opening lap before clipping and puncturing a buoy, earning a penalty lap that effectively ended his afternoon before it had properly begun.

The build-up to Sunday had pointed firmly toward a Torrente versus Rusty Wyatt contest. Torrente and Peter Morin had set the pace through Friday's free practice sessions, and Saturday's qualifying ran to three tense rounds before Torrente claimed his 13th career pole. Grant Trask had briefly held the fastest time, but a penalty for impeding another driver dropped him from second to sixth on the grid, promoting Wyatt and Arand to the front row positions behind pole-sitter Torrente.

The Sprint Races did nothing to unsettle those expectations. Torrente dominated Sprint Race 1 from the front, Wyatt answered by controlling Sprint Race 2, and the narrative heading into Sunday appeared firmly set.

A strengthening westerly shortly before the scheduled start prompted officials to abandon the traditional standing start in favour of a rolling format. When the green flag dropped, Torrente led cleanly away with Wyatt and Arand pressing immediately behind him. The drama arrived almost at once. Torrente clipped the Turn 3 buoy, allowing Wyatt to move through into the lead, and before the opening lap was even complete, Sami Selio had barrel-rolled at the same corner to bring out the yellow flags.

At the restart, the two favourites picked up their contest without hesitation. Wyatt swept around the outside at Turn 2 to lead, Torrente fought back at Turn 3, and neither was prepared to yield. Then, within moments of each other, the race was remade entirely. Wyatt barrel-rolled at Turn 2 while pushing hard for the lead. Torrente followed him out of the race seconds later, barrel-rolling at Turn 5. Both pre-race favourites were gone, and the championship picture cracked wide open.

Arand moved to the front and did not waver.

The attrition continued behind him. Dillard barrel-rolled on lap 30, and Morin crashed out with ten laps remaining. By the chequered flag, more than a third of the starting field had been eliminated.

Arand's Sharjah Team teammate Grant Trask crossed the line second, completing a one-two result for the squad. Bartek Marszalek of Stromoy Racing secured third, Alberto Comparato held fourth ahead of Ben Jelf, and three-time World Champion Jonas Andersson rounded out the top six on his debut outing with Team Abu Dhabi.

Sharjah Team manager Scott Gillman, a multiple winner at Cagliari during his own racing career, was measured but unequivocal in his assessment.

"Stefan in the rough waters is one of the toughest to beat. He's going to be a tough, tough contender for the title," Gillman said.

When the championship points were tallied, Torrente's Sprint Race 1 victory had added 10 points to his tally, but his Grand Prix retirement left him without a Sunday score. Arand combined eight sprint-race points with the 20-point Grand Prix victory to leave Cagliari with 28 points in total, enough to lead the UIM F1H2O World Championship standings outright after the opening round.

The conversation around the paddock after Sardinia has shifted entirely. Nobody is debating whether Stefan Arand belongs among the genuine title contenders. The question now is whether anyone is positioned to stop him.
