Secretary's Cup to North Island champion: Lewis Snape wins the P Class title

3 min read

Two weeks after winning the Secretary's Cup in Tauranga, Kohimarama's Lewis Snape came from nine points back overnight to take the Harken P Class North Island Championships at Royal Akarana.

Two weeks ago, Lewis Snape missed the Wihau Shield's top five and raced on for the Secretary's Cup instead. He won that. On Sunday he won the North Island title.

The Kohimarama Yacht Club and Murrays Bay Sailing Club sailor won the 2026 Harken P Class North Island Championships at Royal Akarana Yacht Club on 19 points, three clear of Kohimarama's Hugh Kensington. Will Handley of Murrays Bay was third, also on 22 points but behind Kensington on countback, according to the final results.

Our preview last week called the title wide open, with none of last year's podium entered. The racing bore that out. Six races produced five different winners, and the overnight leader finished fifth.

Blundell leads a light Saturday

Both days were sailed in light conditions, and Saturday belonged to Luca Blundell. The Charteris Bay and Kohimarama sailor won the opening race and added a third and a sixth, ending the day on 10 points. Handley was next on 17, with Snape and Lauchy Wills on 19.

Snape's day started badly with an 11th, but he won race three. Napier Sailing Club's Theo Dacre, sailing P308, won race two after finishing 23rd in the opener.

Sunday changes everything

The last three races turned the table over. Snape won race four and was second in race five, and an eighth in the final race was enough with his 11th discarded. His counting scores were 7, 1, 1, 2 and 8.

Kensington was the strongest Sunday sailor, finishing second, sixth and first, and won the last race of the regatta. Handley won race five and finished fifth in race six. Blundell's weekend went the other way, with a 14th and a 16th on Sunday dropping him to fifth on 28. Wills was fourth on 27, with four fifths and a seventh counting and a ninth discarded.

The Tauranga form held up

The Wihau Shield weekend turned out to be a good guide. Snape won the Secretary's Cup on Tauranga Harbour on 10 and 11 October, with Kensington third, and the pair finished first and second here. Handley, third in the Wihau Shield's swap-boat final, was third again.

It's also a big step on from last year. Snape was seventh at the 2025 North Islands and Kensington fourth.

Wiltshire top girl

Glendowie Boating Club's Philippa Wiltshire was the first girl, eighth overall on 39 points, with a fourth in race one and a third in race four. Kohimarama's Dallas Noyer was second girl in 11th, with a fourth in the final race. Glendowie's Annika Wells, second in race one, was third girl in 12th.

What's next

The season now heads south. Christchurch Yacht Club's Graham Mander Regatta this weekend, 31 October and 1 November, includes the Canterbury P Class Championships. Kohimarama Yacht Club runs its Tanner Cup trials on 12 December, and the 2027 nationals start in Tauranga on 4 January, with the Tauranga Cup from 7 to 9 January.
