Rolex Swan Cup returns to Porto Cervo for Nautor Swan's 60th anniversary

The 23rd Rolex Swan Cup will run from 14 to 19 September in Porto Cervo, Sardinia, bringing together 167 entries toward a 170-boat limit for the Finnish builder's diamond jubilee celebration.

The biennial regatta, organised by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS), has drawn a strong turnout for the anniversary year. The fleet spans the complete history of Nautor Swan — from early Sparkman & Stephens designs through to modern Maxis. The Swan 65 Shirlaf celebrating her 50th anniversary will compete in both the preceding Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup and the Rolex Swan Cup.

Racing splits into three divisions: ClubSwan Racing for One Design classes, ClubSwan Legacy for historic designs, and ClubSwan Spirit for modern yachts including a cruising configuration.

American yachtsman Paul Cayard, competing as tactician on the ClubSwan 50 Cuordileone, described the event's distinctive character: "The Rolex Swan Cup holds a unique position in our sport. There are a number of factors which make it so special: the three brands, Rolex, Yacht Club Costa Smeralda and Nautor Swan, the iconic venue of Porto Cervo, the challenging conditions and the beautiful environment."

Cayard, a Rolex Testimonee for nearly three decades and recent Star and Etchells world champion, emphasised Rolex's long-standing role in yachting: "Rolex's involvement in sailing runs really deep. It has been present for nearly 70 years and is pervasive. It offers such a base of strength, so that when it puts its weight behind an event it is a huge aid to authenticity."

The fleet ranges from 30-footers to 128-foot Maxis, with crews facing demanding racing in the Costa Smeralda waters. Despite the competitive intensity, the regatta maintains a reputation for camaraderie ashore.

Cayard noted the value of diverse participation for the sport's development: "I encourage young sailors to sail on a variety of boats and, whenever possible, alongside people with more experience than themselves. Learning from different sailors and different boats builds a broad foundation."

Rolex has sponsored the Swan Cup since 1984, while its partnership with YCCS dates from 2017. The club's season continues through early October with the J/70 Cup and Italian Championship.
