Tight finals will decide the medals at San Pedro OCR on Saturday, with the 49er, 49erFX and Nacra 17 fleets heading into a compressed medal series on the waters earmarked for the LA 2028 Games.
The Nacra 17 battle could hardly be closer. Sweden's Emil Järudd and Hanna Jonsson lead Great Britain's John Gimson and Anna Burnet by a single point after the two teams traded the top two places throughout the final qualifying day. Gimson and Burnet never posted below a second across six races. One point. That's it.
The Dutch pair Willemijn Offerman and Scipio Houtman sit third, though their starts will need attention after a frustrating final day. "Today was a bit hard for us. We couldn't manage to get off the start line correctly," Offerman said. "We managed to get ourselves into the top five every time, but for sure our focus now is on the starts." France's Tim Mourniac and Aloïse Retornaz remain in contention.
Germany's Richard Schultheis and Fabien Rieger lead the 49er fleet into the final after closing qualifying with back-to-back bullets. Uruguay's Hernán Umpierre and Fernando Diz had been dumped to fifth after a brutal fourth day, then clawed back to second overall. Great Britain's James Grummet and Rhos Hawes are third.
Thursday threw everything at the Uruguayan crew. Umpierre described having to re-rig the tack line on their spinnaker mid-race after it broke loose under load, an OCS compounding the damage. "We were more trying to fix problems yesterday rather than sailing our race," said Diz. Better starts and sharper execution turned things around on the final qualifying day. "Today we were properly sailing what we wanted to execute."
Racing the inner course for the first time this week gave the fleet more to work with tactically, and the Uruguayans clearly relished it. "It's a bit less boring than just sailing to the right side," Umpierre said. "The inside gives you much more options to come back and play a bit with the shifts."
Sweden's Vilma Bobeck and Ebba Berntsson top the 49erFX standings after a tight final qualifying day against Spain's Paula Barcelo and Maria Cantero, who won races one and three while the Swedes took race two. Great Britain's Freya Black and Saskia Tidey are third.
Germany's Marla Bergmann and Hanna Wille produced one of the day's better stories. They started the final qualifying day outside the top ten and scraped through with just two points to spare. That was enough under the compressed scoring format to put them in medal contention. The format caps the deficit any sailor can carry into the final: no more than nine points behind the competitor immediately ahead, and no more than 18 points behind third overall for those placed third through tenth.
"We're going all in tomorrow and fighting for the chance we have at the bronze medal," said Wille, who acknowledged the format cuts both ways. "We've faced it the opposite way around this season already, so it's nice to also experience it from this position."
Bergmann was matter-of-fact about the week's conditions. "Waves, flat water, shifty, not so shifty, we had it all. And we're happy to have made it into the top 10, just super close."
For those who didn't make the top ten, racing the 2028 Olympic venue gave them something concrete to bank for the next two years. Puerto Rico's Isabella Calzadilla and Mercedes Delgado, who only began sailing together in January, found themselves in competitive positions off the start line against the world's best 49erFX teams. "The main thing we learned is that speed really makes you a technical genius here," Calzadilla said. "We were able to have really good starts, but it was just crazy starting next to a really good team, like Odile and Karlinde from the Netherlands. And then they just accelerate…a lot." Delgado added: "We're really grateful to be able to be here with the best teams in the world."
The final is two back-to-back 15-minute sprints on the inside course, starting at 2pm, with the medal ceremony to follow at 6.30pm.
