ROCKWOOL Racing surged to three podiums from three races at the Spain Sail Grand Prix in Valencia on Saturday, putting the Danish team firmly in the hunt for a place in Sunday's four-team final.
It wasn't a smooth start. Race 1 proved tricky, but the team recovered to claim third.
They followed that up with second in the next race.
Then came the highlight of the day. A clean performance in the final fleet race handed ROCKWOOL Racing first place.
"It was a great first day. Everyone's put in a lot of work for a long time, to get back to the boat speed and the slipperiness that we used to have. Everyone from the sailing team, to the shore team and the coaches has been putting in the hours, and it pays."
Danish skipper Nicolai Sehested was quick to point out the value of banking the good days when they come.
"You have to take the positives when they're there, it's important to celebrate your wins. We felt really good in this wind range at least, with nice boat speed. There's still a long way to go but it's nice to tick off that we look okay in the light stuff."
He wasn't getting ahead of himself, though.
"We've had good first days in the past and messed it up the second day, so we're not complacent. But it's positive to feel that we're sailing pretty fast, and going into Race Day 2 feeling a little more comfortable."
With light winds across the course, teams raced with just four crew aboard. The Flight Controller took over grinding duties, freeing Sehested to help fly the boat from the wheel.
The Race 3 victory marked Sehested's 20th fleet race win at the helm of ROCKWOOL Racing SailGP Team.
Denmark now heads into Race Day 2 holding a two-point advantage over United States SailGP Team in Group B of the split fleet, with a final berth within reach if the form holds.
