Conch Republic Beer crowned official brew as Key West races loom

2 min read

Conch Republic Beer has been declared the official beer of the Conch Republic, just weeks after the Florida Keys brand was named the official beer of Race World Offshore ahead of the International Championship Races in Key West this November.

Mayor Emeritus Dennis Wardlow, who founded the Conch Republic as Key West's mayor in 1982, made the declaration alongside Captain James R. Gilleran, Secretary of State of the Conch Republic, during a ceremony on Saturday 3 October at Schooner Wharf Bar in Key West, the Republic's official party headquarters.

The brand has moved quickly since launch and is now stocked in 37 retail and on-premise locations across Key West and the wider Keys. Its tie-up with Race World Offshore sits alongside a separate sponsorship deal with Mom Ain't Happy Racing, which will see the Conch Republic Beer logo appear on the team's raceboat and the brand take a prominent spot in the Race Village throughout race week. It's the brand's first major race team sponsorship.

The Conch Republic itself was born on 23 April 1982, when Wardlow, then mayor of Key West, led a tongue-in-cheek secession from the United States in protest at a US Border Patrol blockade of the Keys. More than four decades on, that spirited stand is still celebrated every year, and the Republic now has an official beer to go with it.

For a circuit built on speed, noise and open-water spectacle, a beer sponsorship might seem a small detail. But Race World Offshore events run as much on atmosphere as horsepower, and Key West race week in particular draws heavily on the island's party culture to pull crowds to the water's edge.

That local buy-in has become a theme of the build-up. Sponsors range from the Florida Keys' hometown bank backing the World's Fastest Boat Parade to a Marathon-based electrical contractor coming on board behind the scenes.

For New Zealand followers of offshore powerboat racing, the Key West International Championship Races remain one of the sport's marquee fixtures on the global calendar, and a drawcard for raceboats and crews chasing international silverware late in the year. Sponsorship, branding and local support matter almost as much as the racing itself in keeping these events viable year after year, whether that's accommodation deals such as Ocean Key Resort's long-standing position at Zero Duval Street or hotel sponsors confirmed for the 2026 fleet.

Conch Republic Beer's rise from a 37-location regional launch to double sponsorship and civic recognition inside a few months shows where that momentum is heading, with the fleet due to line up in Key West this November.
