Becka and Zach, the British couple behind the sailing account Teulu Tribe, bought a 1985 Colvic Victor 40 Ketch in 2020 with limited offshore experience. They have since covered 8,000 miles across 19 countries and are currently in the Sea of Cortez, with Alaska as their next major goal.
The pair sail as cruisers, anchoring out wherever possible and making regular offshore passages. Their route has taken them from England through Europe, the Atlantic islands, the Caribbean, and Central America before arriving in Pacific Mexico.
A curved helm bar made it difficult to find a workable position for a new Raymarine chartplotter. They fitted a Scanstrut Flex Mount and Scanpod, which allowed them to position the display where a fixed mount would not have worked, and to adjust the pod height depending on who was on the helm.
Installation was straightforward, with labelled parts and clear instructions. Durability was the priority for a boat covering serious offshore miles, and they cited resistance to rust and wear as the key reasons the setup suits them. Having the chartplotter and radar mounted in reliable, visible positions is, in their words, a significant safety factor on passages where navigation aids need to be consistently accessible.
From the Sea of Cortez, the plan is to head north through British Columbia and on to Alaska. Preparation for that leg will focus on cold-weather readiness, including additional heat sources and a cockpit enclosure to handle the wetter conditions expected further north.
