Yalçin retires from the Golden Globe Race as deBoer's clearance turns into a real dispute over paperwork

Selim Yalçin has retired from the 2026 Golden Globe Race. Race founder Don McIntyre confirmed it on today's briefing, describing a decision Yalçin had thought about for a long time before choosing to step away at Cádiz, already looking ahead to the race's 2030 edition rather than pushing on in Chichester Class as he'd once intended. It closes out a story that began with an HF radio failure and a long, grinding beat against the wind out of the Strait of Gibraltar, one that never turned the corner.

Guy deBoer's situation is now a standoff, not a repair delay. McIntyre laid out, in more detail than he'd offered before, exactly what's been happening between his office and Spirit's camp in Lanzarote. A first survey document arrived with no letterhead, no surveyor's name, no date and no signature, "anyone could have written it," as McIntyre put it, and he sent it back asking for something properly signed. A second report did follow, one McIntyre now calls "very good, very appropriate," and he says he believes the original surveyor genuinely wrote it. But nobody from his side actually saw that surveyor on the boat, and his only account of the inspection came from a social media post deBoer made himself, not from direct contact. DeBoer's Fuerteventura history and the stakes of getting back on the water were covered here after Lanzarote, and this latest turn has added real friction to a story neither side has fully resolved in public.

The structural problem is worse than first described too. McIntyre now says there are genuine structural issues with the hull, separate from the chain plate concern that started all this, though he maintains it's fixable. The path back to racing is plain enough: the surveyor has to sign off on both the chain plates and the hull repair, deBoer has to sign his own declaration that the boat is fit for ocean sailing, and only then comes a mandatory sea trial, 50 miles out and 50 back, fully loaded, before any green card gets issued. Asked what happens if that process doesn't resolve in deBoer's favour, McIntyre didn't hedge: "Guy will absolutely continue. If he doesn't get a green card, he'll just go anyway and do his own thing, which is fine." It's a striking admission that this could end without the GGR's blessing either way.

Out on the water, the racing hasn't paused for any of it. Guido Cantini has completed a real turnaround on Ertan Beskardes, trailing by 5 nautical miles three days ago and now leading by 3, while Daniel Pinsky and Etienne Messikommer are fighting the opposite kind of battle, 243 nautical miles apart on the water in an east-west routing split neither side has settled yet. Helga Marie "Mara" Løvenskiold Kveseth has quietly closed 89 nautical miles on the group ahead of her over the same three days, now just 8 nautical miles behind Beskardes. Tropical Storm Gonzalo has left its mark in hard numbers rather than forecasts: Gunnar Christensen and Isa Rosli both logged 40-knot gusts, and Christensen has used the breeze to close from 70 nautical miles behind Rosli down to just 1.

Against the race's own history, this year's fleet remains two places ahead of Jean-Luc Van Den Heede's winning 2018 pace at the same point in the race, and eleven ahead of Kirsten Neuschäfer's 2022 pace, a gap that's narrowed slightly from three days ago but still points to a fast fleet by the standards of the last two editions.
