1 min read

Mattias Coutts took home the NZL Sailing Foundation Young Male Sailor of the Year award at the 2025 Barfoot and Thompson Yachting Excellence Awards, capping a memorable night for the 19-year-old. It was his second visit to the stage, having earlier collected the Appliances Online Youth Performance Award.

The NZL Sailing Foundation is an independent charitable trust that provides financial support to young New Zealand sailors competing at international regattas.

Son of Sir Russell Coutts, Mattias put together a commanding season in the Moth class. He won the 2024 PredictWind Moth World Championships at Manly, the 2025 Moth Nationals, the 2024 STACK Winter Champs, and the 2024 PredictWind Moth Oceania Championship, results that firmly established him among the country's most exciting young sailing talent.

Mattias has plans to race in the 49er class alongside Oscar Gunn, targeting a place at the 2028 Olympics.
