Yacht Storm Fantasy destroyed on Auckland rocks after breaking free from Herne Bay mooring

A 30-foot (9m) yacht came to grief on rocks near Auckland's Harbour Bridge after breaking free from its moorings during strong winds over the weekend.

The harbour master and police maritime unit attended the scene at Curran Street on Tuesday, located on the city side of the bridge, to deal with the stricken vessel.

Harbour master operations manager Marc Davis confirmed the yacht, named Storm Fantasy, was beyond repair. The vessel had been broken up and disposed of.

Davis said the owner was out of the country at the time and that the yacht had been "pirating" a mooring in Herne Bay.
