Racing at the 470 World Championship got underway late after light, shifty morning winds eventually filled in enough to complete two races.
Spain's Jordi Xammar and Marta Cardona have one hand on the title. They hold a 12-point lead over second-placed Martin Wrigley and Bettine Harris heading into the medal race, with both crews having consistently held top positions throughout the week.
The standout performers on the day were Italy's Giacomo Ferrari and Alessandra Dubbini, who won both races and climbed from eighth to fourth overall. Matisse Pacaud and Lucie De Gennes sit third, with the Italians now pressing them hard.
Fifth-placed Beatriz Gago and Rudolfo Pires also had a strong day. Gago described conditions of around 10 knots, with the Oscar flag flying for much of the racing. "In the first race, we sailed the first upwind without pumping, and then the Oscar flag was displayed mid-race. We finished eighth — it was okay, and we had a good start," she said. Their second race was considerably better: "In the last race, we had a good start, and the Oscar flag was up from the beginning. We reached the top mark in third place and managed to overtake one boat on the second upwind, finishing second. We are happy — the points are now very tight ahead of the medal race. Let's see, tomorrow should be exciting."
The standings beyond the Spanish boat at the top are tight enough to make the final day genuinely unpredictable.
