Joker Lap format and mechanical failures reshape Australian Offshore Superboat title race

4 min read

Round 2 in Victoria reshaped the Australian Offshore Superboat Championships, making it clear that raw speed alone would not be enough to win this title.

Racing got underway on the morning of the first day, and with it came an announcement from Antony De Fina, Commodore of the Australian Offshore Powerboat Club, confirming the introduction of the Joker Lap. Under this format, each Supercat must complete two extended laps per race, while Supersports takes one. These laps push boats wider and further offshore, adding distance and frequently dropping them into rougher water. The critical variable was timing. Crews who committed to the Joker Lap early had a chance at clean air and open water. Those who held off risked being caught in traffic or pushed wide at precisely the wrong moment. The format had been used in offshore racing elsewhere, but this was the first time it genuinely shaped the outcome of this championship.

Port Phillip Bay added another layer of complexity, behaving exactly as it tends to, with conditions shifting throughout the weekend. The combination of the new Joker Lap format and the unpredictable water meant crews had little chance to settle into any kind of rhythm, with decisions needing to be made on the fly, race by race.

Supercat Extreme: tight racing, then a shift

222 Offshore took Race 1, stopping the clock at around 15:59, though the margin was far from comfortable. MOJO finished within roughly 17 seconds, and both Venturi Offshore and Hornet Racing crossed within a minute of the leader. The field had raced as a pack from start to finish.

Race 2 was even tighter. Hornet Racing claimed their first win in the class, finishing at 31:21, with MOJO just over 20 seconds adrift and Venturi Offshore a further 10 seconds back. Less than half a minute covered the top three at the flag.

The weekend then turned against 222 Offshore. A mechanical failure on lap two of Race 2 ended their race early, and closer inspection afterwards confirmed the problem was serious enough to rule them out of Race 3 entirely. A DNF followed by a DNS wiped out what had briefly looked like a competitive round, and the points damage was significant.

MOJO made the most of that gap in Race 3, winning in 30:56. Venturi Offshore finished second in 31:24, with Hornet Racing third in 31:47. The three boats that had been separated by seconds in Race 1 were still the ones doing the fighting at the end of the weekend.

Supercat Outboard: pressure builds behind the leader

Race 1 never found its feet. A three-boat battle ended when Kess Racing rolled, bringing out a red flag. On the restart, TCR Offshore took the win in 16:28, with TCR Offshore finishing just over two minutes later. The Sting did not finish.

Sunday told a different story. The Sting won Race 2 in 31:21, with TCR Offshore just over 20 seconds behind and DLR Offshore coming home a little under a minute back. Race 3 went to DLR Offshore in just under 32 minutes, with The Sting around 40 seconds later and TCR Offshore a further 50 or so seconds behind. The order had shuffled through each race, keeping the class wide open.

Supersports 85: one boat, one result

With The Colonel absent, Special Edition carried the class through the weekend largely alone. Race 2 showed promise before a seat failure brought their run to a premature end. They regrouped for Race 3 and took the win in 32:01, without anyone close enough to apply real pressure. Even with one Joker Lap to manage, timing still mattered, though with no competition to speak of, there was limited opportunity for that timing to make a meaningful difference.

Supersports 65: nothing between them

Cardiac Arrest won Race 1 in around 32 minutes, though the class gave them no breathing room. Valentus sat just roughly 20 seconds behind throughout, and only two minutes separated the entire group at the finish.

Race 2 shifted things around. The Con crossed the line first, with the remaining boats more than a minute back owing to penalties and a higher number of laps completed.

Valentus came back in Race 3 to win in just under 30 minutes, with Team 38 Offshore finishing thirteen seconds later. The Con was more than a minute behind in third. Three races, three different winners, and a class that refused to settle on a hierarchy.

Where it leaves things

Six races into the season, the Supercat Extreme title fight is genuinely close. Hornet Racing leads on the strength of consistency, with MOJO behind them and 222 Offshore further back, their Round 2 DNF and DNS having taken a real toll on their points tally. In Supercat Outboard, The Sting holds the lead despite one non-finish, sitting narrowly ahead of TCR Offshore, with DLR Offshore close enough to stay in the conversation. Supersports 85 belongs to Special Edition for now, their Round 2 result carrying full weight while The Colonel fades from the picture. Supersports 65 remains the most fiercely contested class, with Cardiac Arrest leading and Nut Case, Valentus, and The Con all within striking distance after a weekend of mixed but consistent results.
