Mike Frank spent twenty years building solar power plants from the ground up. When he turned his attention to life on the water and went looking for a yacht that applied the same logic, he found nothing that satisfied him.
The Bremen-born engineer founded meistro Energie, one of Germany's first companies to deliver direct, CO2-free electricity from proprietary photovoltaic installations. Frank understands solar systems at an engineering level, not as a marketing concept. He also grew up with the sea, the son of a commercial shipping captain. Finding no vessel on the market that reflected either of those backgrounds, he founded Pioneer Yachts.
The company is based in Stralsund, within Germany's Baltic maritime cluster. There is no lifestyle branding here, no vague green credentials. The boats are built around clear system architecture, measurable output, and refinement through use.
Pioneer Yachts' debut model is the PY60, a 60-foot catamaran with exterior lines and naval architecture from Cossutti & Ganz and interior design by Micheletti + Partners. CE Category A ocean certification places it in the same bracket as bluewater passage-makers, and the technical specifications back that up.
Twin 50 kW electric motors run on a 48-volt backbone, a deliberate architectural choice that reduces system complexity without sacrificing meaningful output. Solar generation capacity stands at 16.7 kWp, feeding an LFP battery bank ranging from 187 to 246 kWh depending on configuration. Cruising speed is 7.5 knots, with a maximum of 11. For longer passages or prolonged overcast conditions, an 11-22 kW range extender draws on 736-litre fuel tanks fitted in each hull. Each hull also carries 300 litres of fresh water, supported by a 105-litre-per-hour watermaker. Twin 7.3 kW bow thrusters handle close-quarters manoeuvring.
At 29 tonnes light ship across an 8.98-metre beam, the hull geometry and weight distribution were developed specifically around the solar-electric drivetrain rather than adapted from a conventional design. Three levels provide around 250 square metres of living space.
Frank intends to captain Pioneer One personally, gathering performance data under genuine operating conditions to shape future builds. Pioneer One, the first hull off the production line, makes its public debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival in September.
