ANZAC Day weekend brings with it one of the Bay of Islands' most anticipated passages north, with the Whangaroa Cruising Race and Rally setting out on 25 April for the run up to one of Northland's most dramatic harbours.
The event has established itself as a firm fixture on the local sailing calendar, drawing together two very different kinds of participant under the same banner. Those with a competitive edge can contest the race proper, while anyone who prefers a more unhurried journey north can join the rally and make the passage entirely on their own terms.
Whangaroa Harbour is widely regarded as one of the most striking stretches of water in Northland. Towering cliffs flank the entrance channel, creating an approach that rewards the effort of getting there, and a sheltered anchorage lies waiting beyond. After a full day on the water, the traditional raft-up gives racers and cruisers alike the chance to wind down together and round off the day in good company.
