Wellcraft has a reputation for bold choices, and its latest release is no exception. The American brand has unveiled a new 28-footer, an 8.56-metre offshore dayboat it describes as built to push limits and made to explore together. Sitting squarely in the active dayboating segment, the model promises a mix of sociability, comfort, and genuine offshore capability.
Whether the plan is a fishing trip with mates, a family overnighter on the coast, or a leisurely cruise between islands, the Wellcraft 28 is pitched as the kind of boat that does it all without compromise. Behind that promise lies nearly seven decades of marine engineering history.
Founded in 1955 in Sarasota, Florida, Wellcraft began its life building wooden runabouts. The company's real breakthrough came in the 1960s, when it pioneered moulded fibreglass hulls featuring deep-V designs, a move that genuinely disrupted the recreational boating market. The boats were tough, seaworthy, and sharp-looking, and international buyers took notice quickly.
The 1970s brought further growth, with more than 20 models spanning the lineup, including the now-legendary Scarab range. Then came 1984, and a cultural moment that few boat brands ever experience: the Scarab 38 KV became the on-water star of Miami Vice, sending sales up by 21% and locking in the brand's image as a byword for offshore attitude and high-performance cool.
Since 2014, Wellcraft has operated under the ownership of Groupe Beneteau, building its boats out of Cadillac, Michigan, and drawing on one of the world's most sophisticated marine manufacturing networks. The focus has sharpened considerably, with engineering-led design, high-specification materials, and real-world performance at the centre of every new model.

Recent years have seen Wellcraft re-establish itself firmly in the offshore segment with models including the 38 Explorer, the 38 T-Top, and the flagship 44 Explorer. These are purposeful, bluewater-capable boats for experienced hands. The 28 takes a different tack, channelling that same offshore DNA into a platform that is more accessible, more social, and more versatile.

At 8.56 metres overall, the Wellcraft 28 ranks among the most spacious boats in its category. The cockpit is fully configurable, designed to adapt to fishing, diving, watersports, or simply relaxing on the water. Seating is plush and impact-absorbing, with ventilation systems engineered to keep surfaces cool even through the hottest summer days.
Construction follows Wellcraft's W.I.S.E. process, which stands for Wellcraft Infusion Structure Engineering. This hybrid approach combines resin infusion with injection moulding to produce a hull that is lighter, stiffer, and stronger than conventional builds, while also reducing onboard noise and improving seakeeping. The sleek twin-stepped hull geometry promotes fast, efficient planing and rapid lift-off, keeping the boat responsive through tight turns and choppy water alike. Wellcraft describes the result as "light, responsive, and powerful — delivering instant acceleration, dynamic navigation, and an exhilarating driving experience."
The 28 is not a fair-weather-only proposition. High freeboards help keep the deck dry in coastal conditions, oversized stainless steel handrails add reassurance underway, and multiple windscreen and roof configurations allow owners to dial in the level of protection they need. Wellcraft says these models are "adaptable to all conditions" and "inspire confidence" through their secure decks and considered detailing. Copper-tinned wiring throughout speaks to durability in saltwater environments, part of a broader engineering philosophy built around longevity.
