The U.S. SailGP Team's push for the season finals has been thrown into fresh doubt after reserve driver Harry Melges was ruled out of this weekend's Rolex Switzerland Sail Grand Prix, just a day after the team lost its first-choice driver to injury.
Melges had been widely tipped to step in for Taylor Canfield, who was sidelined with an "upper body injury" ahead of the event in Geneva.
But on Tuesday the team confirmed on social media that Melges had also picked up an injury of his own, and would not be racing in Switzerland.
The statement read: "U.S. team reserve driver Harry Melges IV will be unavailable for the 2026 Switzerland Sail Grand Prix this weekend after suffering a leg injury."
"The team wishes Harry a quick recovery and looks forward to his return to action."
With only three Grands Prix remaining this season, the timing could hardly be worse. The top three finishers at season's end qualify for the Championship-deciding Grand Final, and losing both the first-choice driver and his replacement leaves the squad short of options heading into Geneva.
The team has not said what caused either injury, nor who will take the helm this weekend. For now, the U.S. campaign heads into one of its most important regattas of the year without a confirmed driver at all.
