A major search operation for a missing fisherman off Pataua South has entered a new phase, with the Royal New Zealand Navy joining crews already working to locate the second man from a 17 foot runabout reported overdue on Friday night.
Police confirm the expanded effort got under way at first light this morning, with personnel from the National Dive Squad, Search and Rescue, Coastguard units, and Navy all heading back out onto the water as the operation continues to intensify.
Detective Sergeant Paul Overton said the vessel had been expected back at 7pm on Friday, with alarm raised roughly two hours after that deadline passed.
"On Saturday morning the boat was found drifting with no one aboard, and shortly after a body of one of the two fishermen was found."
The tragedy has hit the small community around Pataua South hard, something Detective Sergeant Overton addressed directly.
"This is a really tough time for the families of those fishermen, and for our community as a whole."
All efforts are now directed toward bringing the remaining missing man home.
“A large scale search by sea and air is ongoing, along with searches of the shoreline. The Royal New Zealand Navy has kindly offered to assist in the search today, and we are grateful to have their expertise.”
Detective Sergeant Overton also acknowledged the support from locals who have stood alongside official crews throughout the search.
"I would like to extend my thanks to all the other agencies involved in the search, as well as those members of the public who have been nothing short of generous with their time and support."
Police are urging anyone who spots anything unusual in the water to call 111 without delay.
