Sydney Harbour's lightest conditions of the weekend shaped Race 6 of the 2026 SailGP Sydney event, a slow, tactical battle that reshuffled the overall standings with just one fleet race to go before the event final.
Heading into the race, Spain's Los Gallos, helmed by Diego Botín, led the event on 41 points. Emirates GBR and Australia's BONDS Flying Roos were level on 33 points each, with the United States on 30 and Artemis close behind on 29. The narrow margins between second and third meant every position on the water carried real weight.
By mid-afternoon the breeze had fallen into the low single digits, prompting teams to select the 27.5 metre wing and light air T foils. Crew numbers were reduced to four athletes per boat to cut weight, sustained foiling proved nearly impossible, and the F50s spent the bulk of the race in displacement mode.
The United States found space through the centre of the course and built just enough separation to control the first beat. Nothing explosive, but in such marginal conditions it did not need to be.
The tricky breeze created problems across the fleet. Switzerland ran into trouble before the start and Sweden picked up an early penalty. Protests broke out among boats jostling for room in the light air, and recovery from any mistake proved far harder than expected. Germany sailed with composure to hold second, while ROCKWOOL Racing moved through to claim third.
Spain recovered steadily to finish fourth, preserving valuable points overall. Mubadala Brazil placed fifth and Australia sixth. Emirates Great Britain slipped to seventh after close engagements disrupted their forward momentum. Italy finished eighth, Artemis ninth, NorthStar tenth, and Switzerland eleventh.
The Race 6 points allocation gave the United States 10, Germany 9, and Denmark 8, with Spain collecting 7 to hold the overall lead heading into the final fleet race.
