Day one of the SSL Gold Cup European Qualifiers Round 2 produced tight, high-quality racing across two groups, with Ukraine, Finland, and Portugal among the early frontrunners.
A light southwesterly filled in around midday, allowing the Race Committee to raise the orange flag at 12:20. Teams were keen to get races in ahead of expected storms, with temperatures forecast to climb into the mid-thirties.
Group F opened on a 0.6-mile windward-leeward course set in a 265-degree breeze. Finland squeezed Ukraine off the committee boat end at the start while Greece took the pin, and the tactical battle was on from the first moments. Ukraine's United team made the most of clear air on the left to cross ahead and lead at the leeward gate by 34 seconds over Finland, with Greece close behind.
Captain Rodion Luka kept a composed loose cover on the opposition up the final upwind leg and brought Ukraine home first. Finland held off Greece for second.
Race 2 extended the course to 1.2 miles. Finland's helm Lucas Karlemo hooked into a left shift on the final beat to round 22 seconds clear of Greece, then worked the downwind leg to take the win, with Greece holding second from Ukraine. Finland leads Group F overnight on 5 points, Ukraine on 4, and Greece on 3.
Group G had its own drama on a shifty 235-degree course as clouds built. Türkiye won an aggressive pre-start battle and rounded the first windward mark 14 seconds clear of Portugal and Bulgaria. A halyard clutch error on the hoist gifted Portugal a chance to close, and Afonso Domingos steered them right to the line, gaining an overlap before the final gybe. Türkiye just held on for a two-second win in a photo finish.
Race 2 saw Bulgaria lead early after a bold tactical call upwind, but Portugal were relentless. The Bulgarians nearly lost a crew overboard on the second beat, pulling off a spectacular recovery, but when the teams re-engaged Portugal had found a high mode to squeeze them into a tack and opened a 50-metre lead. The Navigators rounded the final windward mark 22 seconds clear and made no mistakes to the finish.
Portugal lead Group G overnight on 5 points, with Türkiye on 4 and Bulgaria on 3. Both groups remain wide open heading into day two.
