For as long as anyone can remember, yachts have relied on one of two sources for fresh drinking water: hauling it aboard in plastic bottles or wrestling with a reverse osmosis system. Neither option is particularly elegant. Watermakers demand ongoing maintenance and produce brine as a byproduct, while bottled water brings extra weight, recurring cost, and a growing pile of plastic waste. A Florida-built 68-footer is now offering a genuinely different answer.
The RM Design Pro SXR 68 XL, developed in partnership with Altitude Water, is set to become the first U.S.-built vessel to generate its own fresh drinking water directly from the surrounding air. The technology at the heart of this is an atmospheric water generation (AWG) system, fully integrated into the yacht's infrastructure from the outset rather than bolted on as an afterthought.
The principle behind AWG is straightforward. Ambient air is drawn in, filtered to remove dust and particles, then cooled to its dew point so that moisture condenses into droplets. Those droplets pass through multi-stage filtration, UV sterilisation, and carbon filtering before being mineralised for taste and health. The finished product is clean, ready-to-drink water, produced without any seawater intake, brine discharge, or bottled supplies. There is no plumbing connected to the sea, no risk of salt corrosion, and no concern about microplastics entering the supply. Building the system into the yacht from day one also sidesteps the taste, reliability, and maintenance frustrations that often plague owners who retrofit a conventional watermaker later.
For reference, the AWG Trident 12 unit measures 40.6cm x 56cm x 101.6cm (16″L x 22″W x 40″H). Production efficiency varies with conditions. Warm, humid air at lower altitudes delivers the best output, while cooler or drier environments slow things down.
Altitude Water founder Jeff Szur has seen portable AWG units placed aboard yachts before, but describes this project as the realisation of a longer ambition. "We've placed portable AWG units on yachts for years," he says. "The real vision was always full integration. Now we can deliver a self-reliant water supply that frees yachts from outside provisioning."
The SXR 68 XL is a broader exercise in sustainable design, bringing together hybrid propulsion, solar regeneration, and AI-based controls. At 68 feet, the multi-level layout delivers a main salon and dining area, an upper-deck salon with bar, a skylounge, up to four guest cabins, a crew cabin, and a separate owner's suite, with provision for a hot tub on the main deck as well. Interior specialists M2 Holistic Studio shaped the brief around a combination of luxury, wellness, and low-impact living.
RM Design Pro founder Rogerio Mariani credits M2 Holistic Studio with bringing the water technology to his attention. "When M2 Holistic Studio introduced Altitude Water's technology as a potential sustainable solution for onboard water, I was instantly intrigued," he said. Mariani went on to integrate the AWG system with his own Yacht Integrative Control Systems & Monitoring (YICSM) platform, a move he sees as significant well beyond this single build. "We integrated Altitude's AWG system with our AI-based Yacht Integrative Control Systems & Monitoring (YICSM), a breakthrough that can now be replicated in future builds," he continued. "After several meetings with the Altitude team, it became clear we weren't just improving this vessel, we were creating a system that could help transform the yachting experience."
The practical appeal is easy to appreciate for anyone who has spent time cruising remote waters, whether in the South Pacific, Alaska, or out-of-the-way Mediterranean anchorages. Generating drinking water from air reduces the environmental footprint, removes a significant logistical burden, and delivers a degree of self-sufficiency that neither bottled water nor a conventional watermaker can match. Szur puts it plainly: "This is more than a yacht. It's an off-grid, energy-efficient vessel that produces clean drinking water without relying on desalination or bottled water."
The SXR 68 XL remains under construction, yet the thinking behind it already points to where the industry is heading. How lightly a yacht takes from the world around it is becoming as relevant to its sustainability story as how efficiently it moves through the water.
