Two men were out fishing on Lake Manapouri on the evening of Sunday 20 July when something went wrong. One did not survive. The other is now recovering in hospital after sustaining serious injuries. Police have confirmed the fatality and say an investigation is under way.
Southland Area Commander Inspector Mike Bowman said authorities were alerted at around 7:20pm after the pair, both described as experienced fishers, failed to return from their trip on the lake. They had also missed routine marine radio contact, which prompted immediate concern among locals.
A search got under way that night, with marine channels monitored and local aerial assets brought in to assist. A helicopter was deployed and, after an extensive night search, the missing vessel was located at around 12:30am at Safe Cove, near the western arms of the lake. The helicopter crew found both men still aboard. One had died. The other, although seriously injured, was promptly transported for treatment and is understood to be recovering well in hospital.
Inspector Bowman confirmed that police are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, including what may have occurred aboard the vessel prior to its discovery. "Enquiries will be made by Police on behalf of the Coroner in relation to the deceased," he said. "Police's sincere condolences go out to their family and loved ones."
The overnight response drew on the combined efforts of search teams, hospital staff, and police, and Go Boating NZ extends its sympathies to the families of those involved.
