Three boats over, everyone safe: a brutal Saturday at Michigan City

Rough weather forced three separate boats over during Saturday's racing at the 17th annual XINSURANCE Great Lakes Grand Prix, round two of the XINSURANCE UIM World Championship Series, before worsening conditions forced officials to cancel Sunday's programme entirely.

Conditions on Lake Michigan built through Saturday's qualifying and racing at Michigan City, Indiana. The day was interrupted by red flags on three separate occasions after boats went over: Cat 300 entrant Jackhammer capsized early in bracket racing, both crew members safely extracted through the boat's tunnel escape hatch. Racing resumed with reduced lap counts, before heavy rain cut visibility and forced a second stoppage.

When racing resumed again, Discrete Offshore Racing went over during the Class 1 race, both crew safely extracted, before Class 1 was subsequently called, with results taken from the last completed scoring lap. A restarted Super Cat and Class 2 race was then halted a third time when EWB Racing went over, after which RWO ended racing for the day entirely. Super Stock never got underway. The unfinished Class 2 and Super Cat programmes, along with Super Stock, were pushed to Sunday, but worsening conditions meant none would race; Mod V, already rescheduled to Sunday earlier in the day, met the same fate.

Outta Pocket takes the Class 1 result

Class 1 was the only UIM championship class to produce a classified Saturday result: Outta Pocket Racing (Billy Moore/Kevin Burrell) won, ahead of Club Car Wash/BPR (Bill Pyburn/Darren Nicholson) and Marine Technology/GC Racing. Discrete Offshore Racing, the boat involved in the second incident, was classified last. Super Cat and Class 2 did not complete a classified race, every entrant across both classes was credited only start-only points. DSK Marine won Super Vee, and bracket class winners included Herbott Racing, Hartman/XINSURANCE and Tuff Noogies.

RWO confirmed on 3 August that Sunday's remaining races were cancelled, and later thanked the teams, fans and Michigan City community for their support through the disrupted weekend. The season now moves to Clearwater, Florida, 25 to 27 September.
