You know that moment when you're looking to buy your next boat, and you see one that's just a metre or two longer? It's tempting, but suddenly that extra space stops looking like a luxury and starts looking like a massive headache. You start thinking about the extra weight, how the wind is going to catch the hull, and how much momentum you're going to have to fight when you're trying to squeeze it back into the docking slip. We've all been there. There's nothing quite like the stress of docking a boat that feels just a bit too big for you, especially when half the dock is sitting there watching your every move.
Boatbuilders know exactly how nerve-wracking this is. In fact, the team at Nimbus say that when people hesitate to buy a bigger boat, it's rarely about the price or the layout. It's almost always because they're scared of handling it.
Because this is such a huge hurdle, a few marine tech companies are tackling the problem from completely different angles. Take Volvo Penta, for example. They're already putting an "Assisted Docking" system on production cruisers, including Nimbus's own Sport Coupé 42. You still use a joystick to guide the boat, but the system does all the heavy lifting underneath. It uses GPS to read the wind and current in real time, making tiny adjustments to the drive so the boat tracks perfectly straight instead of crabbing sideways into a piling. As Nimbus's technical sales director Lew Davies put it: "Whether it's your first boat or your last boat, this really makes it so you can enjoy your time on the water."
Then you have Avikus, the autonomous tech arm of HD Hyundai. They teamed up with Honda Marine to build a system called NEUBOAT right into Honda's throttle systems. This one uses six cameras to give you a full 360-degree view around the hull. Instead of you trying to guess the distances, you just pick how you want to dock, bow first, stern first, port, or starboard, and the system works out the wind and current, then takes over the steering and throttle to bring it in, though you're still the one supervising the whole approach. The coolest part is that they aren't just putting this on massive flagship engines. They're putting it on the BF115, which is the exact kind of everyday outboard you see on regular trailer boats all down the coast.
Simrad is chasing the exact same goal with a system called AutoCaptain, which is starting to pop up on Sea Ray and NAVAN boats. It uses six stereo cameras that can see perfectly even in low light. Unlike the others, it isn't just an assistant bolted onto a joystick, it's built for full auto-docking from the ground up. The only catch is that it exclusively talks to Mercury Marine engines, so you can't just slap it onto whatever motor you currently have.
The big picture here is that the marine industry doesn't want you to have to become a master captain just to buy a larger boat. And you want the boat to handle itself so that the audience on the dock never gets a show.
Of course, nobody is saying you can just switch off your brain. All of these companies explicitly warn that you still have to be a competent skipper and stay at the helm. If the wind suddenly spikes past what the system can handle, or if the tech miscalculates, you're still the one who has to take the wheel and save the fibreglass. It won't instantly turn a beginner into a seasoned pro, but it might just take away the biggest reason to say no to that bigger boat.
