The PIC Harbour Classic is back for 2026, cementing its reputation as one of the most inclusive, energetic, and visually spectacular sailing events on the Auckland calendar. Scheduled for 20 to 22 March 2026, with the main race on Saturday 21 March, the event brings a mass-participation spirit to the Waitematā that few regattas can match.
The philosophical backbone of the Harbour Classic comes from Italy's Barcolana Regatta in Trieste, an event defined by open access rather than elite barriers. Grand prix racers and family cruisers share the same start line, and that same sense of collective belonging is what the PIC Harbour Classic has worked to recreate on Auckland's water since its founding.
The New Zealand Multihull Yacht Club launched the event in 2023 with a straightforward purpose: celebrate the harbour itself, get boats on the water in big numbers, and build something that felt as much like a waterfront festival as a race. From the outset, the vision was for competitive sailors and complete newcomers to share the same experience, and that intention has shaped everything about the event's character.
Entry numbers have grown year on year, the variety of boats lining up has widened, and the Harbour Classic has earned a reputation for its genuinely welcoming atmosphere. Seasoned racing crews have found themselves at the start line alongside cruisers, families, friends, and sailors experiencing organised competition for the very first time.
For 2026, boats will again berth in the heart of the city at Jellicoe and North Wharf, turning the Viaduct into a floating village for the weekend. Berthing layouts will differ slightly this year, so crews with specific requirements are encouraged to flag them during registration.
The move to March reflects a crowded summer calendar, giving the Harbour Classic the breathing room to maintain its own identity. The race remains the centrepiece, supported by a welcome function, prizegiving, and the return of the much-loved onboard afterparty.
The PIC Harbour Classic is about far more than finishing positions. It is a chance for Aucklanders, and sailors from further afield, to reconnect with the inner harbour, introduce new people to the sport, and remind the city why it has long carried the name City of Sails.
