Fastnet Rock is behind Manu Cousin, and that milestone carries considerably more meaning than a routine position update. What lies ahead, the long open-water passage back to Les Sables d'Olonne, will demand every bit as much from him as the miles already covered in the Vendée Arctique.
Sailing aboard Coup de Pouce, Cousin rounded the famous Irish lighthouse in the small hours of Friday morning, at approximately 7:45 NZST on 20 June. He remains the only competitor still on the water, his rivals having completed the course weeks earlier. The standings have long since ceased to tell the real story. What counts now is each remaining mile, taken one at a time.
Few landmarks in offshore sailing carry the symbolic weight of Fastnet Rock. For generations of ocean racers, that solitary lighthouse has marked the boundary where home waters give way to the full Atlantic. Within the IMOCA circuit it holds a place in the sport's folklore that no chart notation could ever convey. Cousin has sailed past it before, on RORC events and during training passages, but there is a world of difference between rounding it under ordinary circumstances and arriving there after weeks of solo racing.
The approach proved more difficult than he had hoped. The weather between Wales and Ireland offered no consistency and no rhythm to work with. Wind came and went. Squalls broke through calms. Cousin had been aiming to clear the rock on Thursday afternoon, but the conditions had other ideas. He found himself stuck in a band of light, unreliable air, not completely becalmed but never moving with any real purpose either. When the breeze finally returned with conviction, it came hard against the bow, demanding tiring work from a skipper already deep into a long campaign.
"The day wasn't easy," Cousin said. "It's always on, off, on, off. I was hoping to get ahead of the light patch holding me back, but it caught up with me anyway. I wasn't completely stopped, but I clearly wasn't moving very fast either."
The Irish coast is now astern. Fastnet Rock marks no finish line for Cousin. It marks only the point at which the race back to Vendée truly begins.
