Diego Botín's Los Gallos had built Spain's lead through early dominance, while the Americans reached the final through disciplined risk management. Great Britain rounded out the three-boat field having put together a steady, measured series throughout the fleet stage.
When the final got underway, the unpredictable conditions that had characterised the fleet racing remained firmly in place. With only three boats on the start line, securing clean breeze from the outset was critical. Emirates GBR and USA timed their starts well and positioned themselves to capitalise. Spain chose to build pace from lower on the line and found themselves slightly behind from the opening moments.
The first upwind leg proved decisive. The American team found a touch more pressure than their rivals and converted it into a marginal lead at the first mark. From that point, both GBR and Spain faced a straightforward choice: take risks to claw back the deficit, or watch the race slip away.
Neither found the right move.
Attempts to get onto the foils came and went without result. The breeze never held long enough to sustain flight, and much of the race played out off the foils entirely. In those conditions, GBR and Spain simply struggled to build the momentum they needed.
The Americans read the situation clearly. Rather than chase unstable flight, they prioritised platform stability, control, and boat speed. That approach proved enough. USA crossed the finish line first, with GBR taking second and Spain third.
The win carries genuine significance for the American programme. It is the United States' first event victory since Cádiz in Season 4 under Jimmy Spithill, and it marks Taylor Canfield's first event win as skipper of the U.S. SailGP Team.
Nobody would describe it as a vintage final. The breeze never cooperated. But in difficult, uncooperative conditions, the United States made the fewest errors and capitalised on the one opportunity that mattered.
One chance presented itself. They took it.
