Suzuki Marine's presence at the Hutchwilco Boat Show comes down to one thing: outboard motors. No boats, no electronics, no accessories sharing the space. From a compact 2.5hp portable right through to a 350hp unit, the entire stand is given over to engines and nothing else.
That tight focus reflects something more deliberate than a straightforward marketing call. Suzuki has shaped its range specifically around the New Zealand single-outboard trailer boat, typically for vessels up to around eight metres, with these motors engineered from the ground up for that application. They are not designs built for American multi-engine configurations and quietly repurposed for southern hemisphere conditions. They were conceived for the way New Zealand boaties actually use them.
Central to the technical story is Suzuki's offset driveshaft. Where many competing motors rely on a direct drive arrangement, the offset design delivers a higher gear ratio of around 3.5:1. That ratio allows a larger-diameter propeller with bigger blades to turn at the correct speed without being overdriven. More blade area is therefore doing the work, and Suzuki say less horsepower is lost through the drivetrain as a result.
Two further technologies build on those efficiency gains. The duo prop option pairs a second counter-rotating propeller with the first, splitting the load and lifting overall efficiency higher still. Lean burn operates at cruise, trimming back the fuel mixture once the motor has moved past its working load threshold and cutting consumption at the speeds most boaties spend the bulk of their time running.
Backing the whole range is a seven-year warranty, the longest currently available in the outboard market.
Show specials span the full lineup. The 2.5hp portable is priced at $999, the 6hp at $1,999, and fitted deals are available on the 40, 60, and 80hp models. The 100 to 150hp range is offered with 0% finance over three years, and specials extend through to 350hp as well.
