"Superlatives are for landlubbers," Richomme said, reflecting on the close contest. "It’s crazy to think this is already the end of the Vendée Globe. If I make it to the finish, it’ll be great!"
Both skippers are making impressive progress, averaging speeds of 20 knots, with the winner expected to cross the finish line within two nights.
A Thriller in the Peloton
While the leaders battle for the title, the race from fourth to tenth place is equally intense. Skippers like Sam Goodchild ( VULNERABLE ) and Jérémie Beyou ( Charal ) are neck and neck, maintaining relentless pressure to stay ahead.
"Being neck and neck with Sam allows us to maintain a good pace. Every adjustment matters," Beyou commented, highlighting the fierce competition.
However, technical challenges are taking their toll. Boris Herrmann ( Malizia Seaexplorer ) climbed his mast to fix a broken J2 hook, while Nicolas Lunven ( Holcim-PRB ) lamented his eastward route choice, which cost him valuable ground.

The peloton is benefitting from steady trade winds but faces uncertainty as they approach the doldrums and shifting conditions near the North Atlantic.
"From the Canaries to the finish, the weather forecast is not set at all," Lunven explained. "There is a lot of uncertainty!"
Meanwhile, at the back of the fleet, Kiwi Conrad Colman ( MS Amlin ) and Guirec Soudée ( Freelance.com ) have escaped an anticyclone, while others remain stuck, battling to progress northward.
