Stockholm hosts 96 sailors as Team Racing World titles get underway

The 20th Team Racing World Championship Race Village at Holger Bloms Plats is taking shape fast. Along Norr Mälarstrand, tents and boats are going up, exhibitors are installing their stands, and what might have been a bare competitor base is becoming something more considered: a meeting point where sailing, innovation and one of Europe's great waterfront cities converge.

Ninety-six sailors are filtering in from around the world, making final preparations and sizing up the competition before the first races on Riddarfjärden. For some, Stockholm is familiar territory. For others, it's a first visit.

The youngest arrival may prove the most memorable. Tsubaki Kondo, one year old and daughter of Japan's Wataru Kondo, has made the journey with the Japanese team, bringing another generation into the international team racing community.

There are sibling stories here too, and they cut both ways.

Ines and Lucas Karlemo from Espoo are sailing together for Finland, despite not having raced as a regular pairing for long. "You get frustrated more easily with your sibling," Ines says. "But the good thing is that it goes away very quickly. Two seconds later, everything is completely normal again."

Sweden's Lukas and Fabian Bergman have reached the opposite conclusion. Separate boats suit them better. "We think very differently about sailing," Lukas says. "You might think that because you are brothers, you understand each other well. But we actually approach situations quite differently." The divergence can be an asset, he adds, partly because their communication style runs so close. "We say similar things and even sound similar, which can be reassuring for the crew."

Neither pair exactly chose the sport. "We were basically forced into it," Lukas says of himself and Fabian. "Our parents thought: let's keep going until they break." It worked. The Bergman brothers have since beaten their father through the qualification process to reach Stockholm.

Sustainability is woven through the event's planning in practical, visible ways. Stena Recycling has provided clearly marked sorting stations throughout the venue. Single-use plastic bottles are gone entirely, replaced by refill stations, and partner Bluewater supplies a purification system drawing drinking water directly from Riddarfjärden itself, a pointed reminder of just how close the racing is to the city's shore.

View Regatta is already on the water testing ahead of the opening race. The system combines smartphones, real-time data, 3D graphics and artificial intelligence to make team racing legible to audiences unfamiliar with the tactics and split-second decisions the format demands.

Racing begins at 09:30 tomorrow. The nervous energy of preparation is almost spent.
