The 2008 Palm Beach Motor Yachts 50 Sedan 'Louise', finished in a deep Awlgrip 2000 midnight blue, turns heads in any marina she enters. She has crossed an ocean on her own hull, delivered from New Zealand across the Pacific to the Gold Coast, a passage most owners never ask of their boats.
For those of us who will only ever admire her from the dock, here's what that life looks like from the inside.
Step aboard via the wide teak-laid swim platform and through to a cockpit built for long, unhurried afternoons. An L-shaped transom lounge folds out into a daybed, shaded by the standard Palm Beach bimini, with three-sided clears available for when the weather turns. There's a wet bar to port with its own ice maker and a fridge and freezer to starboard.
Through the saloon bulkhead, timber detailing and a centreline door open onto a living space most apartment dwellers would envy. Windows on every side flood the room with light. To starboard, a fold-away dining table sits beside an L-shaped lounge, while a second lounge to port faces a Hi/Lo television.
At the helm, a wide bench seat accommodates both captain and companion in comfort, backed by a full Raymarine suite of GPS, sounder, radar and autopilot. Bow and stern thrusters take care of the close-quarters work when docking in front of an audience.
Below decks, the galley wants for nothing. A Miele induction cooktop and microwave sit alongside a Nespresso machine and integrated Fisher & Paykel dishwasher drawer. The main head carries the same signature teak flooring found throughout, paired with a separate glass shower stall.
Forward, the master cabin is a retreat in its own right. An island double berth is framed by a mirrored wardrobe and generous cabinetry, kept comfortable year round by air conditioning and a Webasto diesel heater for cooler passages. Additional pullout berths in the saloon mean guests can stay aboard too.
Twin-shaft-drive Yanmar 6LY3 engines and a Kohler generator, installed new in 2022, sit below decks, while a 120-litre-per-hour Aqua-Matic Sea Recovery water maker means self-sufficiency at anchor is never in question.
