Solent at 100 km/h draws packed crowds to Portsmouth SailGP opener

Thousands of fans packed Portsmouth's waterfront on the opening day of the Emirates Great Britain Sail Grand Prix, turning the race stadium into a wall of colour along the Solent foreshore.

Grandstands filled with supporters waving team flags and cheering spectacular overtakes as the F50 fleet flew across the racecourse at speeds approaching 100 km/h. Families, lifelong sailing fans and first-time spectators all found a place in the festival atmosphere, with the shoreline alive from morning until late.

On the water, SailGP's new group racing format kept the action continuous, with every race carrying added significance as teams battled to secure a place in Sunday's winner-takes-all showdown. Fans ashore explored the event village and enjoyed unrivalled views of the high-speed fleet racing against the backdrop of the Solent.

Portsmouth again proved why it ranks among SailGP's most spectacular venues, with a passionate crowd and fast racing to match.
