Marine solar kits bring energy independence within reach for Kiwi boaties

Solar power has transformed what it means to live aboard. Not so long ago, spending a week on the hook meant firing up the engine each morning just to keep the batteries alive. That ritual is becoming a thing of the past, replaced by the quiet, steady work of panels drinking in sunlight. Energy independence afloat, free of exhaust fumes and engine noise, has shifted from a niche aspiration to something genuinely within reach for everyday Kiwi boaties.

The speed of that shift surprises many people. Marine solar technology has moved from basic rigid glass-fronted panels bolted to hardtops all the way through to ultra-thin laminates engineered for racing yachts, and the range of options now available suits virtually every vessel type, budget, and ambition.

The two workhorses of the solar world remain monocrystalline and polycrystalline panels. Monocrystalline cells, dark and sleek in appearance, deliver the most power relative to their size. Polycrystalline panels carry a characteristic blue tint, give up a little in efficiency, and typically come in at a lower price point. Both technologies have proven themselves in the marine environment, whether framed in aluminium or laminated directly onto a surface. Sailors looking for lighter and more adaptable solutions have driven the development of thin-film panels and flexible laminates, which turn up on biminis, coachroofs, and sail covers. The trade-off is a modest drop in efficiency, but the gains in versatility and weight saving make that worthwhile in many situations.

Some manufacturers have begun combining carbon-fibre structures with emerging cell technologies. Italian company Levante is one example, producing their CarbonCore panels from recycled carbon-fibre reinforced polymer. The result is a semi-rigid panel light enough for a spinnaker boom, strong enough to walk on, and efficient enough to keep a modern cruising yacht self-sufficient.

Few people have explored the limits of marine solar as publicly, or as persistently, as Dan Deckert and Kika Mevs, the couple behind the Sailing Uma channel. They began converting their 1972 Pearson 36 to electric propulsion well before it was fashionable, and over the years they have worked through multiple electric motors, overhauled battery systems, and put a long list of charging solutions to the test, sharing every result, including the failures, with hundreds of thousands of YouTube followers. In 2025 they teamed up with Levante to design a bespoke carbon-fibre solar array built specifically for their boat and their lifestyle. The goal is to crack a problem the marine industry has not yet fully solved: solar panels that are light enough, efficient enough, and tough enough for months of genuine off-grid passage-making. Even with considerable skill, deep motivation, and a willing audience, arriving at the perfect system can take years.

For most boat owners, that path is neither practical nor necessary. The smarter route is to start with something already proven.

Whether the task is topping up house batteries on a weekend launch or keeping a fridge, lighting, and navigation gear running aboard a cruising yacht, these kits remove much of the complexity. Bluetooth monitoring, integrated smart controllers, and marine-grade components have closed the gap between off-the-shelf convenience and a custom installation. Buying locally carries its own advantages too. A retailer that understands boating in New Zealand's salt-laden conditions can provide genuine advice before the purchase and practical support afterwards.

Rigid framed panels, flexible laminates, and carbon-fibre composites are all improving in efficiency and durability. Early adopters like Sailing Uma have mapped the frontier. For most boat owners, though, energy independence no longer demands a workshop full of tools or years of experimentation. The route is shorter than it has ever been.

On a personal note, monocrystalline panels have been running on my own boat for several seasons without issue. Space on deck is limited, so the higher efficiency of mono cells was the deciding factor. Victron's built-in Bluetooth and smartphone interface make the whole system transparent in a way that older setups simply were not. Other controller brands perform very well too, and Burnsco stocks a solid range of alternatives suited to smaller installations or tighter budgets. The Victron kit does carry a price premium, and for a straightforward setup a less expensive controller may do the job perfectly well. In my experience, though, the combination of reliability, precise monitoring, and readily available local stock and support makes it the benchmark for marine solar applications, and worth the additional outlay.
