Six illicit sat-phone calls cost Mara 16 days in solo race row

A dispute between Golden Globe Race competitor Mara and race organisers has cost her 16 days, after officials ruled she made a series of unauthorised satellite phone calls during a live broadcast.

The McIntyre GGR introduced its WINDOW LIVE broadcast this edition, giving followers an unprecedented look at the reality of solo, non-stop sailing around the world. Race organisers say Mara used the facility in ways that fell outside its intended purpose, and on one occasion breached the agreed code of conduct. A public row followed.

According to a GGR report dated 12 October 2026, the trouble began at Lanzarote on 18 September, just 12 days after the start, when Mara's manager held a private meeting with her at sea and later told race officials she was dissatisfied with her social media campaign and considering a switch to GGR Ambassador status. That status, under NOR C.2.3, allows an entrant who has left the competitive rankings to continue sailing with the fleet while using satcoms, GPS and personal media freely, but only at the sole discretion of the organiser.

On 27 September, Mara broadcast a message to her social media team suggesting she might need to be disqualified if they didn't improve their performance. On 8 October, her management formally asked GGR to move her WINDOW LIVE broadcasts from the official GGR YouTube channel onto her own platform, a request GGR says had already been raised and rejected before she agreed to the original terms.

Matters came to a head on 11 October. Mara phoned GGR making allegations against founder Don McIntyre and demanding a public apology. McIntyre denied the allegations by email and asked for them to be specified and backed with evidence, which GGR says was not provided.

That evening, during her scheduled WINDOW LIVE session, Mara made six unauthorised satellite phone calls to her manager over about 50 minutes, totalling 31 minutes, covering topics from sponsors and staffing to the possible creation of a board of directors. Her manager streamed the calls live on her own social media account and read out a prepared letter proposing four options, including leaving the GGR altogether or shifting to Ambassador status with her own channel.

Under NOR F.8.1, unauthorised satellite calls carry a 24-hour penalty for a first offence and 72 hours for each subsequent one. GGR says the six confirmed calls, with no material assistance established, add up to a cumulative 16-day penalty. Mara's participation in WINDOW LIVE has been suspended while the dispute is resolved, and GGR has asked her team to supply evidence for the allegations made against McIntyre.

A follow-up GGR statement on 14 October said Mara's allegations, including a claim that McIntyre had responded callously to screenshots suggesting she might die, had been found incorrect with no supporting evidence supplied. The statement confirmed an appeal against the 16-day penalty was under consideration.

The row has played out while the race itself continues to tighten at the front, where Pat Lawless has been closing the gap on leader Damien Guillou. For McIntyre and his team, this edition of the GGR has demanded managing an on-water contest and an off-water governance dispute at the same time.
