Shoulder pops out mid-manoeuvre, sailor forced out near Azores

Erwan Le Draoulec has dislocated his shoulder during a manoeuvre roughly 100 miles south-west of the island of Flores.

The incident happened this morning at 7.39am, with Le Draoulec sailing in 25 knots of north-westerly wind at the time. He managed to put the shoulder back into place himself within minutes of the injury occurring.

His shore team remains in close contact with him and is working through the options available for the remainder of his race.

No decision had been made public at the time, though he would go on to abandon the race and divert to Horta in the Azores on medical advice. His shore team judged the risk of continuing too great, even with the shoulder back in its socket.

More news is expected in the coming hours as the situation develops.
