Spain takes Race 2 victory at SailGP Sydney with a late charge past Switzerland

Spain worked their way through the fleet methodically before taking the lead at Mark 5 and holding it to the finish, claiming Race 2 of the 2026 SailGP Sydney in a time of 9:11.334. The result reshuffled the weekend standings and confirmed that the day's racing would be decided by execution under pressure as much as raw speed.

Conditions made life complicated for every team. Cloud shadow drifted across the course and the breeze bent and dropped unpredictably through Sydney Harbour, meaning advantages that looked secure on one leg could evaporate entirely on the next.

Switzerland got off the line quickest and commanded the opening phase. At Mark 1, Spain were only 5.1 seconds adrift, Brazil sat 10.9 seconds back, and the rest of the fleet, including USA, Germany and Italy, were already conceding more substantial margins. Australia rounded that first mark a full 1 minute 7 seconds behind Switzerland, an early sign that replicating their controlled Race 1 performance was not going to be straightforward.

The Swiss kept the pressure on through the early gates and remained in front at Mark 2, with Spain tracking them at 13.8 seconds. That gap was close enough to matter. In fickle air, a single poor manoeuvre or a shift that caught the leader wrong could bring the chasing boat right back into contention. Switzerland's advantage, which had grown through the Mark 3 phase, had trimmed back to 16.8 seconds by Mark 4. Spain were sailing cleaner exits and making the most of each transition, and the deficit continued to shrink. At Mark 5, Spain moved into the lead and did not relinquish it.

Further back, the race played out with far less predictability. Australia's afternoon was disrupted by umpire penalties stemming from a port and starboard incident with Great Britain. In lighter conditions, every forced manoeuvre and every moment spent off the foils carried a disproportionate cost. Denmark, who had shown genuine strength in Race 1, could not find a way back into contention. Brazil came out of the blocks with encouraging pace but were unable to sustain it through the stages that counted most.

Italy and USA both put together consistent enough performances to move through the fleet, while Sweden sailed within themselves to stay in touch with the leading group. By the time the final leg arrived, the front four were still separated by seconds, but a clear divide had opened between them and the teams trailing at the back of the fleet.

Switzerland crossed the finish line 19.4 seconds after Spain, with USA completing the podium a further 13 seconds back, 32.4 seconds behind the winner in total. Italy took fourth and Sweden fifth. Spain's ability to manage pressure selection, maintain flight stability and time their manoeuvres through the middle phase proved to be the margin that mattered.
