In a thrilling final day of semi-final racing at the UniCredit Youth America's Cup, Team Italy and Team USA secured their spots in the finals after a fiercely contested fourth race. The day’s racing kicked off with tension in the air as Italy, having already secured their place in the finals, was hit with a penalty for crossing the starting line too early. This gave Australia a clear lead out of the gate, with Sweden close behind, battling to keep their hopes alive for a place in the finals. The UK followed in third, but it was Spain that quickly disrupted the Swedish challenge, surging into second place midway through Leg 1.
The early stages of the race saw intense competition, with Sweden managing to briefly regain second place, only to fall off their foils—an error that sent them plummeting to the back of the pack. By the time the boats rounded Gate 1, Australia had established a commanding lead, going through at 3 minutes and 46 seconds, with Spain in second and the UK, USA, and Italy jostling for position behind them.
Leg 2 saw further drama as the UK briefly came off their foils, allowing Italy to climb into third place. Australia maintained their stronghold at the front, passing through Gate 2 at 6 minutes and 49 seconds, now with a 200m lead. Behind them, Spain held onto second, but Italy was closing in fast, demonstrating their championship pedigree.
As the boats entered the final leg, Australia’s lead remained unchallenged, but the battle for the remaining positions was fierce. Italy overtook Spain to move into second, while Sweden continued their uphill fight to catch the pack. However, their earlier foil mishap left them too much ground to make up.
Australia crossed the finish line first with an impressive time of 14 minutes and 23 seconds, followed by Italy in second, Spain in third, and the USA in fourth. The UK and Sweden rounded out the fleet in fifth and sixth place, respectively.
Despite Australia’s commanding performance, it was Italy and the USA who secured the coveted spots in the finals. Sweden, once seen as strong contenders, left the race bitterly disappointed, with their performance falling well below expectations.
