A major search and rescue operation is underway in Fiji after a fibreglass boat carrying six people failed to reach its destination in the Lau Group. Strong winds and rough seas are making the search more difficult.
The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) said three fibreglass boats left Namuka Island at about 10am on Thursday, 6 August (Fiji time), bound for Fulaga Island. Two completed the journey safely. The third, a white half cabin fibreglass boat powered by a 40 hp outboard, has not arrived.
Reports that the vessel was overdue reached the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) Fiji on Thursday evening (Fiji time). Fiji Navy search and rescue coordinators worked through the night with local authorities, nearby vessels and community contacts before expanding the operation on Friday with both surface vessels and aircraft.
Strong winds hamper the search
Search crews are contending with a nationwide strong wind warning, with forecast south easterly winds of 20 to 30 knots producing rough to very rough seas across the area.
MSAF said there were also concerns the overdue vessel may not have been carrying lifesaving equipment. The authority stressed that information had not been confirmed.
Mariners travelling between Namuka, Fulaga and nearby waters have been asked to keep a lookout for the missing boat and its six occupants. Anyone with information is urged to contact JRCC Fiji immediately.
Safety reminder for boat owners
MSAF has again urged small boat operators to respect weather warnings before heading to sea.
The authority reminded skippers to ensure their vessels are seaworthy and carry appropriate safety equipment, including lifejackets for everyone on board, reliable communications equipment, distress flares and enough fuel for the intended voyage.
The search was continuing on Friday, 7 August (Fiji time). Authorities said further updates would be released as confirmed information becomes available.
