The first Sargo 45 Explorer to reach New Zealand has arrived, brought here by European Marine NZ, the Australasian distributor for Finland's highly regarded Sargo Boats. As the flagship of the entire Sargo range, the Sargo 45 Explorer has been engineered for serious offshore capability and year-round liveability, and its arrival marks a significant moment for Kiwi coastal cruising.
Sargo's story stretches back five decades to Kokkola, a port city on Finland's west coast, where the same family that founded the yard three generations ago continues to hand-finish every boat that leaves the shed. That continuity of craftsmanship gives the brand a character that is difficult to replicate. Inside Passage Yacht Sales' Brian Krantz, who features in the official walkthrough of the near-identical Sargo 45, puts it simply: "a vessel with a heart — every hinge, joint and angle carries the family's legacy." For New Zealand buyers, that heritage has obvious practical appeal. A hull designed to handle the icy Baltic translates directly to Cook Strait and Foveaux Strait, where demanding conditions make structural integrity and seakeeping as important as any luxury fitting.
The Sargo 45 Explorer shares its hull and layout with the standard Sargo 45, set apart by an expedition-oriented trim package. Buyers can select from darker or lighter grey hull colours, complemented by black rails and exterior detailing suited to offshore work.
Boarding is straightforward and confidence-inspiring. A wide, level side deck, a hull-side boarding gate, and generous handrails make moving around the boat easy in any conditions. Two social spaces, an L-shaped sofa aft and a U-shaped sofa forward, give the deck versatility whether you are anchored in the sunshine or sheltering from a southerly.
Stowage has been thought through carefully. Cushions, tables, and six full-size fenders all have their own dedicated lockers, keeping the working deck clear. The space beneath the aft cockpit accommodates stabilisers, a generator, air-conditioning, or additional fuel capacity depending on the owner's priorities. Engines are mounted aft and surrounded by sound-dampening insulation, which keeps the wheelhouse impressively quiet. Normal conversation remains comfortable even at 30 knots.
Inside, the Sargo 45 Explorer opens into a bright, contemporary living space. Four forward-facing seats let every passenger share the view while underway, and an eight-person dinette alongside a properly equipped galley make extended passages genuinely enjoyable. The galley includes a double sink, gas oven, two-burner cooktop, ample refrigeration, and a Fisher & Paykel dishwasher, a detail that will resonate with New Zealand owners.
The helm station reflects Scandinavian ergonomic thinking throughout. Adjustable suspension seats, a tilting console, twin 22-inch displays, and a matte anti-glare dash finish give the skipper everything needed for long passages without fatigue. Owners can specify twin 440 HP DPI sterndrives or twin 480 HP IPS 650 drives, both delivering a cruising speed of around 30 knots with enough range to reach New Zealand's more remote coastlines. The hull carries CE Category B – Offshore certification, confirming its suitability for serious offshore use.
The wider boating industry has taken notice. The Sargo 45 was named a Best of Boats Finalist in 2023, received a European Powerboat of the Year nomination in 2024, and took out a Motorboat Awards win the same year.
Sea trials for the Sargo 45 Explorer will be available from early December. European Marine NZ anticipates strong interest from owners seeking a genuine all-season pilothouse cruiser, one equally capable of a winter crossing to Great Barrier Island or a summer week exploring the Marlborough Sounds.
