Peter Burling and Black Foils chase SailGP title at Abu Dhabi Grand Final

2 min read

Four teams remain mathematically alive for the SailGP Championship title as the season reaches its climax at the Mubadala Abu Dhabi Sail Grand Prix 2025 Season Grand Final on 29–30 November. After eleven events spanning venues across the globe, Peter Burling's Black Foils (New Zealand), Emirates GBR skippered by Ben Ainslie, Tom Slingsby's BONDS Flying Roos (Australia) and Diego Botín's Los Gallos (Spain) are the last crews standing with a genuine shot at glory.

The format is unforgiving. Six fleet races on the Arabian Gulf will determine which three of those four crews advance to a single, winner-takes-all final. Only one boat crosses the line first, and that crew claims both the Rolex SailGP Championship title and the US $2 million prize that comes with it.

For Burling and the Black Foils, the Grand Final represents a chance to correct what has been a patchy mid-season and deliver New Zealand its SailGP crown. Slingsby's Australians have been the standard-bearers for consistency throughout the campaign, while Ainslie's Emirates GBR squad and Botín's Spanish team have kept themselves firmly in the hunt through podium finishes. Spain took out the major prize at the previous year's Grand Final, and the presence of all four crews at this stage is no accident. The group genuinely represents the upper tier of the SailGP fleet.

The leaderboard heading into Abu Dhabi after racing in Cádiz tells the story of just how compressed this title battle is. A handful of points separates the four contenders, meaning every start, every tack and every gybe across those six fleet races could prove decisive.

Off the water, the Grand Final stays true to SailGP's tradition of pairing elite sport with major entertainment. When racing concludes on Saturday 29 November, Olly Murs will take the stage at the Race Stadium, performing with a full band in support of his new album Knees Up. On Sunday 30 November, Mark Wright, the Heart Radio host and DJ, takes over at Après-Sail presented by Mastercard, rounding out the season in style.
