Rowers eye the fern as 2027 team nominations open wide

2 min read

Nominations have opened for the full suite of 2027 New Zealand representative rowing teams, giving athletes around the country a fresh shot at pulling on the fern.

The list is broad. It covers the New Zealand Elite Team, which includes Para rowing, through to the U23 World Championships Team (which includes PR3 Para rowing), the U19 World Championships Team, the New Zealand University Team heading to the FISU Games, the U19 Development Team, the U22 Oceania Championships Team, and the North v South U18 Teams.

For athletes at any stage of the pathway, there's something to aim for.

Rowing New Zealand has released its 2027 Selection Guidelines alongside the nomination process, and athletes considering a nomination are strongly encouraged to read them carefully before diving in.

Requirements differ markedly between teams. Ergometer standards and testing windows vary, with 5km and 6km tests applying to international U23 hopefuls, while others face 2km benchmarks. On-water performance requirements, eligibility rules and nomination criteria also shift depending on which team is in an athlete's sights.

Getting across the detail early matters. Knowing the specific requirements for a target team is key to being properly prepared throughout the selection process.

To help athletes, coaches and supporters navigate the pathway and selection requirements, Rowing New Zealand is running a pair of online information webinars.

The U19 World Championships Team webinar goes ahead on Tuesday 20 October at 7.30pm. The U23 World Championships Team webinar, for New Zealand-based athletes, follows on Wednesday 28 October, also at 7.30pm. Both will cover team expectations, selection processes, performance standards and key dates for the 2027 season.

Representing New Zealand internationally remains one of the highest honours in the sport, an opportunity that creates lifelong memories and experiences.

Whether the goal is a World Championships campaign, a FISU Games berth, or selection for the Oceania Championships, now is the time to start planning.

Full details on nominations, selection guidelines, webinar registration and team-specific requirements are available on the Selection Info and Policies page of the Rowing New Zealand website.
