Route du Rhum day four: fatigue and solitude laid bare

2 min read

Four days into the Route du Rhum, it is not the leaderboard but the onboard photography that is telling the real story: tired faces, snatched rest between watches, and the quiet toll of solo ocean racing beginning to show.

The latest batch of images, relayed directly from the boats, features Guillaume Pirouelle, Guirec Soudée, Boris Herrmann, Théa Khelif, Titouan Pilliard, Maxime Sorel, Eric Péron, Frédéric Mailhos, Robin Marais and Thimoté Polet.

The shots capture skippers at the helm, trimming sails, checking instruments, or simply resting. For followers in New Zealand, these glimpses are often the clearest read on conditions out on the course, arriving well before official routing updates confirm what the fleet is up against.

It has already been an eventful race. Armel Le Cléac'h was rescued at sea after a Panamanian cargo ship was diverted to his assistance, a reminder of how quickly fortunes can turn on this course.

Boris Herrmann remains one of the most closely watched sailors in the fleet. His IMOCA campaign draws close attention from the wider ocean racing world, New Zealand included, where IMOCA design and technology continues to filter through to local offshore programmes.

Maxime Sorel and fellow Frenchman Eric Péron are among the other skippers whose onboard footage has emerged, alongside Frédéric Mailhos, Robin Marais and Thimoté Polet.

Guirec Soudée, known for his adventurous solo sailing background, and Guillaume Pirouelle also feature in the day's selection. Younger talent Théa Khelif and Titouan Pilliard round out the group captured by onboard cameras on day four.

There were no results or rankings in this update, just raw, unfiltered images from the boats themselves. These are the moments between the tactics and the weather calls, when a skipper is alone with nothing but the boat and the ocean.

With the fleet now strung out across the Atlantic, the gap between the leaders and the rest is beginning to widen. Wherever they sit on the leaderboard, every skipper is facing the same demanding solitude.

More updates, and likely more images, are expected as the fleet pushes on towards Guadeloupe.
