Raymarine Pathfinder solid-state commercial radar now available in NZ through Lusty & Blundell

Solid-state technology has steadily reshaped recreational and light commercial electronics over the past decade, and Raymarine's new Pathfinder brings that same shift firmly into the commercial sector. Designed as a direct alternative to traditional magnetron-based systems, the Pathfinder is an IMO-compliant, solid-state X-band radar built for vessels up to 10,000 tonnes.

The range spans the commercial spectrum broadly. Superyachts, large motor yachts, offshore support vessels, and deep-water operators are all within the intended market, with CAT 2 and CAT 3 configurations available to suit different vessel classifications. The decision to move away from the magnetron is central to the product's appeal: that component has long been one of the most demanding maintenance items on a conventional commercial radar, and eliminating it reduces both servicing frequency and the costs that come with it.

Performance has not been traded away in the process. Raymarine states that the solid-state transmitter delivers output comparable to that of a 12kW magnetron system and, in certain conditions, can exceed it. CHIRP pulse compression and beam-sharpening technology work together to improve target separation and maintain clarity at long range, which is particularly valuable in congested waterways or when visibility is poor. The antenna itself is a fanless, low-profile six-foot open array, keeping topside weight and windage to a minimum.

Display options are matched to vessel category. CAT 3 installations can be paired with 16- or 19-inch screens, while CAT 2 configurations support 22- or 24-inch displays. All screens carry Raymarine's HydroTough nano-coating, a treatment intended to repel water and oil contamination without compromising readability under bright ambient light.

For operators working through a refit rather than a new build, the practical aspects of installation matter as much as the specifications. The Pathfinder weighs roughly half what many comparable commercial radar systems do, and its interconnect cables are smaller in diameter than those typically required by conventional units. Both factors reduce the complexity of cable runs and cut the time needed to complete an installation, which translates directly to reduced downtime and lower labour costs on a working vessel.

The system also offers a broad range of input and output connections, meaning installations can be configured to suit individual vessels from the outset and expanded later as operational requirements develop.
