Switzerland's sharp tactical instincts proved the decisive factor in Group B's opening race at the 2026 SailGP Halifax event, with Sebastian Schneiter steering his four-person crew to a convincing victory on Halifax Harbour. Artemis took second place, while Germany by Deutsche Bank rounded out the podium in third.
Racing conditions had shifted markedly since the morning's Group A contest. Wind strength climbed past 20 km/h and swung north from a westerly direction, altering the course layout and prompting officials to trim crews from five athletes down to four. A safety regulation introduced following the New York collision also required two athletes to stay tethered behind the steering wheel throughout the race to help maintain visibility across the fleet.

Taylor Canfield's USA team made the most of the start, clearing the fleet to lead around Mark 1, with Dylan Fletcher's Emirates GBR and Germany tucked in close behind. Italy and Artemis found the freshening conditions difficult to manage and dropped toward the rear as the boats spread out across the harbour.
The turning point came when three-time Olympian Schneiter identified additional pressure building on one side of the course and committed to splitting away from the lead group. It was a bold call, and it paid off almost immediately. Switzerland settled into the stronger band of wind, found clean foiling and held it, and steadily opened a margin the rest of the fleet could not close. Nathan Outteridge, helming Artemis, read Schneiter's move quickly enough to follow the same line, lifting his boat from fifth through to second place.
As the final stages of the race unfolded, the Halifax breeze became unreliable again, stripping pace from the boats still in pursuit. Switzerland and Artemis completed the course within the time window, but the nine-minute limit expired before the remaining competitors crossed the line. Those boats were scored according to their positions at the last completed gate.
The time limit ruling reshuffled the standings considerably. USA and Emirates GBR, despite having led the fleet through the early part of the race, were dropped to fifth and sixth respectively. Italy, which had struggled at the start, found itself elevated to fourth place as a result of the scoring adjustment.
