Lightning sits near the top of the list of genuine dangers facing anyone afloat. A direct strike carries an average of 300 million volts and 30,000 amps, a combination powerful enough to obliterate every electronic system on board and leave the owner facing a catastrophically expensive rebuild. What tends to receive less attention is the threat posed by near misses. When a bolt strikes close to a vessel rather than on it, a massive current can discharge into an iron keel and travel through the boat's structure, burning out wiring and electronics along the way.
Italian manufacturer Euthalia has been making anti-lightning devices for more than 70 years, building a client list that takes in many of Italy's most celebrated buildings. The company has turned that experience toward the marine environment, developing a layered protection system specifically designed to address the near-miss problem that so often goes unconsidered.
The system works in three distinct stages. At the masthead, a passive cone disrupts the upward electrical charge that naturally attracts lightning toward a vessel, deflecting potential strikes before they can connect. Further down the vessel, a series of large fuses connected to the keel intercepts any current attempting to travel through the hull, protecting thrusters, stabilisers, and their associated control electronics from damage. The third layer brings protection right to individual pieces of equipment. Small sensors powered by 12V are wired directly to chart plotters, radar units, network hubs, and similar devices, operating as intelligent fuses that detect an incoming surge and isolate each item before harm can be done.

The vulnerability is a real one. Modern boats carry levels of integrated electronics that would have seemed extraordinary a generation ago, and that equipment faces its greatest exposure precisely during the kind of severe weather that generates lightning in the first place. Euthalia's three-stage approach targets that overlap directly.
The Ferrari Hypersail project has selected Euthalia as its lightning protection partner. The project centres on a carbon fibre yacht, due to launch this year, designed to run entirely on renewable energy. The choice reflects the seriousness with which the team is treating the electrical risks that come with operating a heavily instrumented vessel in open water.
