The final races of the SSL Gold Cup European Qualifiers Round 2 delivered everything the format promises: double points, three-way tension, and no margin for error. Spots at the SSL Gold Cup Finals Brasil 2026 were on the line, and racing was anything but straightforward.
Group G came down to the wire. Portugal's Navigators entered their final race sitting on 12 points, ahead of Türkiye's Young Turks on 9 and Bulgaria's Lions on 8. All three teams still had a mathematical shot at Rio. A large windshift forced the race committee to reset the course under AP with a minute to go. Once racing resumed, tactician Hugo Rocha, who had shown exceptional situational awareness all week, guided the Navigators through the start superbly, squeezing out the Young Turks and covering the Lions.
Bulgaria wrestled their way to the front, breaking their cover to lead at the windward mark and threatening one of the day's biggest upsets. A kink in their spinnaker drop line let Portugal close the gap, and a sharp manoeuvre by the Navigators pushed Türkiye aside to reclaim second at the leeward gate.
Bulgaria knew winning the race alone wasn't enough and tried covering Portugal on the second upwind, which risked letting Türkiye slip past both. As the boats converged on the windward mark, Portugal seized the moment, threading past the Young Turks before pouncing on the Lions, who had misjudged their layline by the finest of margins. The Navigators were going to Rio.
Group F's finale was effectively a match race before the gun. Ukraine's United and Finland's Northern Magic were locked together on 12 points each. Greece's only path through required both leading teams to be disqualified simultaneously, a prospect that was infinitesimally small.
Finland went on the offensive in the pre-start, tailing and hooking Ukraine to force them into a tack, but got tangled with the Greeks at the pin end. That handed Ukraine's helm Rodion Luka and tactician Oskar Madonich exactly the opening they needed, a pair of clean tacks putting them over the top and in command.
Finland tried a 'sambuca' gybe-set at the windward mark to claw back into contention, drawing praise from commentator Yann Dorset, a self-confessed fan of the manoeuvre. It wasn't enough. Ukraine stayed disciplined, covering Finland from distance on the upwind legs and, despite a bird's nest forming in the starboard spinnaker sheet, completed a clean final hoist to seal their place at the Finals.
The Pan American Qualifiers in Rio follow in early November, before the main event: the SSL Gold Cup Brasil 2026, billed as the Football World Cup of sailing.
