Porsche's signature Oakgreen metallic finish makes for a striking calling card, but what lies beneath the hull of the Frauscher × Porsche 850 Fantom is far more significant than any paint choice. This fully electric day cruiser has just claimed the title of the world's fastest electric boat under regulated competition conditions, recording a peak average of 49.84 knots across two one-kilometre runs at the 2025 Monaco Energy Boat Challenge. The previous record had sat at just over 47 knots, and it didn't last long.
The 850 Fantom is the result of a collaboration between Austrian boatbuilder Frauscher and Porsche's E-Performance division, drawing its powertrain directly from the automotive world. That powertrain comes from Porsche's upcoming Macan Turbo, a crossover EV capable of more than 400 kW and 1,000 Nm in overboost. Transplanted onto water, that same technology has now rewritten what electric marine performance looks like.
What makes this record particularly notable is that the boat which set it was no stripped-back competition prototype. The vessel that lined up at Monaco was a fully specced production unit, complete with upholstery, infotainment, navigation systems, and seating for seven. Nothing was sacrificed in the pursuit of speed, except the time on the clock.
Under the Deck: Porsche Tech, Frauscher Flair
Beneath the teak decking sits an 800-volt electrical architecture, a permanent magnet synchronous motor, and power electronics drawn directly from Porsche's automotive production line. Frauscher's craftsmanship wraps around engineering that has already proven itself on road.
A 100 kWh battery pack is mounted amidships to optimise trim and balance. Drivers can select from four modes: Docking, Range, Sport, and Sport Plus. The Monaco record was set in Sport Plus. That spread of modes, covering everything from marina manoeuvring to flat-out competition runs, speaks to how broadly capable the boat is designed to be.
“This project is the perfect showcase for Porsche E-Performance on the water,” said Jörg Kerner, head of Macan product line. “It’s not just fast—it’s refined, efficient, and customer-ready.”
Setting the Record at Monaco
The record run took place during the Speed Challenge, one of three core competitive categories at the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge alongside Efficiency and Endurance events. The challenge is hosted under the umbrella of the Prince Albert II Foundation, which has built the event into a prominent global platform for next-generation sustainable marine propulsion technology.
With global marine emissions attracting increasing regulatory scrutiny, the 850 Fantom makes a compelling case that performance and environmental responsibility are not mutually exclusive. The Oakgreen livery is more than an aesthetic choice. It reflects a genuine philosophy running through the entire project.
“We wanted to prove that you don’t need to compromise—performance and sustainability can go hand in hand,” said Stefan Frauscher. “This record is shared by the entire 53-person team who made it possible.”
Limited Numbers, Serious Capability
The 850 Fantom is not a concept waiting for commercialisation. It is already in production. Just 25 First Edition boats will be offered, each built to order, and buyers will receive exactly what Monaco demonstrated: the same top speed, the same deck configuration, and comprehensive charging capability.
Charging options include DC fast charging at up to 270 kW, bringing the battery to 80 percent capacity in under 30 minutes, as well as AC charging at up to 11 kW. Range figures sit at 45 kilometres at a 22-knot cruising pace, with more than 100 kilometres achievable at low-speed displacement. At 8.67 metres long and 2.49 metres wide, the 850 Fantom remains trailerable, a practical consideration that sits oddly alongside its extraordinary performance credentials.
What This Means for Boating
For New Zealand boaties more accustomed to alloy runabouts and heading offshore for blue cod, the Frauscher and Porsche partnership might seem like a distant luxury. But the technology on show here is advancing quickly, and the direction of travel is plain enough. High-performance electric boating is no longer a promise on a concept board. The 850 Fantom has already proved it on the water, and Porsche, for all the quiet manner in which it entered the marine space, has left a very considerable wake behind it.
