Boatie rescued from Lake Taupō after vessel catches fire near Kinloch

Shortly before 8pm on a Sunday evening, a boatie was pulled to safety from Lake Taupō after their vessel caught fire. Emergency services responded to an incident at Whangamatā Bay near Kinloch at the northern end of the lake, with the initial callout coming just after 6pm.

Hone Hato St John confirmed their airdesk received a call from police at 6.49pm. Rescue helicopter company Greenlea had a chopper over the water just before 8pm, and the person was rescued shortly before that time.

Following the rescue, the person was taken to hospital. Police confirmed a search and rescue operation had been mounted and stated they were investigating the fire on the boat.
